HBO and Veterans Advantage

“We’re delighted HBO is supporting the brave men and women who serve our country through military service during the holidays with this generous offer, ” said Veterans Advantage Founder and CEO Scott Higgins. “Their programming is world-class and this movie will be greatly appreciated by our nation’s bravest, those serving today on active-duty, and our Military Veterans, National Guard members and Reservists and their families.”

"HBO is proud to be doing something tangible like this on a national scale," said Bill Nelson, Chairman & CEO, Home Box Office "and we support the work that Veterans Advantage is doing by 'giving back to all who serve.'"

Those newly enrolled in Veterans Advantage are eligible to get a free copy of “Taking Chance” – a $19.95 value – starring Kevin Bacon, a movie from HBO Films and an official selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Based on a true story, “Taking Chance” chronicles one of the silent, unseen journeys that bear witness to the fallen and those who carry them home. (Editor's Note, January 17, 2010 -- Kevin Bacon wins Golden Globe Award for "Taking Chance," Best Performance for an Actor in a Mini Series or Motion Picture Made for Television).

A uniquely non-political film about the war in Iraq, “Taking Chance” pays tribute to the men and women who have given their lives in military service and their families. The Emmy award-winning movie received a total of 10 Primetime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie (Kevin Bacon), Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special (Ross Katz) and Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special (Lt Col Michael R. Strobl, USMC (Ret.), Ross Katz). “Taking Chance” has most recently been nominated for the 2010 Critics Choice Award of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

‘Taking Chance’ is not only a riveting movie, but it’s a fitting gift – both for anyone who has served, and the millions of Americans who acknowledge and recognize service and sacrifice," Higgins added.

Veterans Advantage’s new relationship with HBO is of special significance for CEO Scott Higgins, who spearheaded the publication of “Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam, ” while serving as Co-Chair of New York City’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission from 1981-1985. Based on the book, HBO produced a documentary of the same name, winning the cable industry’s first Prime-time Emmy in 1988 and an Academy Award nomination. The HBO produced movie also won the 1988 International Documentary Award, Television Critics Association Award, and Special Jury Prize from the Sundance Film Festival. Both the critically-acclaimed book and movie versions of “Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam” have become classics about the Vietnam War.
