Scott's View: A Salute to the Navajo Code Talkers: Honoring a Legacy

Scott

This Thanksgiving Day Weekend, we remember and honor the incredible legacy of the Navajo Code Talkers. These brave men, who used their native language to create an unbreakable code during World War II, played a pivotal role in securing victory for the Allied forces.

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the recent passing of John Kinsel Sr., one of the last surviving members of this extraordinary group. At 107 years old, Mr. Kinsel lived a long and full life, and we celebrate the indelible mark he and his fellow Code Talkers left on history.

The Code Talkers' story is one of remarkable courage, ingenuity, and patriotism. Their unique ability to craft and transmit messages in Navajo, a language with complex grammar and virtually unknown outside their community, confounded the enemy and proved invaluable in the Pacific Theater.

I had the profound privilege of meeting some of these incredible individuals a few years ago, during my time with Veterans Advantage (now WeSalute). We were active participants in the New York City Veterans Day Parade, and one year, the Code Talkers were among the honored guests. To personally thank them for their service to our country was an unforgettable experience, a moment I will forever cherish.

As we reflect on their legacy, let us remember the invaluable contributions of the Navajo Code Talkers. Their story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from diversity, the power of cultural heritage, and the unwavering spirit of those who defend our freedom.

We encourage you to read today's cover story to learn more about the Navajo Code Talkers and their incredible impact on World War II.

John Kinsel Sr., one of last remaining Navajo Code Talkers from World War II, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024 at the age of 107. His life embodied the importance of the Navajo Code Talkers in U.S. military history. They transmitted messages during World War II based on the tribe's native Diné bizaad language in a code that Japanese cryptologists were unable to break.

On November 7, WeSalute held its fifth streaming of the “Heroes Meet Heroes” event, where military heroes meet Olympic heroes. Moderated by WeSalute co-founder and Chairman Scott Higgins, the annual conversation was started 12 years ago by WeSalute CEO Lin Higgins. It celebrates both the military and sports successes and similarities across two panel discussions. This year’s session was dedicated to Captain Paul “Bud” Bucha, a Medal of Honor recipient and longtime member of the WeSalute Advisory Board who passed away this year at the age of 80.
