VetFamily: Pink, Daughter of Vietnam Veteran and Military Supporter
“I have seen the rain. I've survived the pain. Oh I've been home 30 years or so, and I'm just stepping off of the plane...”
An Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War wrote these lyrics and sang them with his daughter - who happens to be pop icon Pink. In harmony, they recount a story of readjusting to civilian life through song.
Pink, who’s birth name is Alecia Beth Moore, is a three-time Grammy winner known for her raspy rebellious tone. She has released nine albums in her 15-year music career, selling over 90 million records worldwide. In addition to using her celebrity to speak out on political issues, she is passionate about her military family and supporting veterans’ causes.
Her father, retired Staff Sergeant James Moore, served from 1963-1967 working as a weapons maintenance technician.
“The part I really liked about the job I had in the service is that it gave me a lot of responsibility at an early age, 18 to be exact, where I was loading actual nuclear weapons that were live and real. It made you grow up very quickly,” he writes on TogetherWeServed.com. He wrote the song “I Have Seen the Rain” while serving and often played it for his daughter as she grew up. It was the first song she learned to harmonize to.
Another military connection is her brother, Major Jason Moore, who is transitioning out of the Air Force after an extensive career. He served as a member of the USAF Thunderbirds, a two-time Squadron Commander, Operations Officer, Aircraft Maintenance Unit Officer-in-Charge, a one year tour in Afghanistan and a two year tour at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He earned his commission from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2000. When People Magazine asked Pink if she’d get in a plane with her brother, she replied, “Hell, no, he’d make me throw up!” with a laugh. But she added, “I am very proud of what he’s doing.”
While he managed to mostly stay out of the spotlight of his star sister, a photogenic moment during a big game launched him into the public eye. Pink sang the national anthem at Super Bowl 52 and her husband caught a photo of Moore raising his salute, which went viral. It was a moment of national pride for the whole family.
Pink began her career performing in clubs in Philadelphia, not far from her hometown. She was a member of the girl group Choice before signing her first solo recording contract with LaFace Records in 1995. Since then she has had numerous chart-topping tracks. In 2009 Billboard named her the Pop Songs Artist of the Decade and gave her the Woman of the Year award in 2013.
In continued support of veterans, Pink and her husband run a nonprofit with proceeds going to the military community. “Good Ride” is a motorcycle charity ride that focuses on getting out on the open road with your friends and checking out new destinations - all for good causes. They work with “Infinite Hero,” a military charity, and proceeds from their Good Ride rallies go directly to helping veterans in need.
“My entire family is military and mostly veterans, and no one gives back like veterans do,” Pink said. “I’ve been doing car washes every weekend since I was 3 years old and a homeless dinner on Thanksgiving. The camaraderie is amazing. The support is amazing.
“At the end of the day, it’s not political. These are the people that are sacrificing time with their children and time with their families to defend freedom of speech and freedom in general and in their minds it’s always for the right reason.”
