TopVet: James A. Stamm

James A. Stamm

James A. Stamm stands atop one of the country’s major moving and transportation companies, and represents veterans in the executive suite who are committed to serve and employ those who serve.

Stamm, a native of Ft. Wayne, Ind., is a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. The company, which also lists veteran hiring a big part of its business, has also helped its fellow comrades in harm’s way.

In his current role, Stamm is responsible for overseeing the activities of Atlas' eight subsidiary companies, including Atlas Van Lines, Inc., Atlas World Group's largest subsidiary.

Serving Others
When Mike Townsend asked his employer, Atlas Van Lines, to help replace a critical piece of computer equipment for his National Guard unit serving in Iraq, the Evansville, Ind.-based company sprang into action. Atlas' information technology department quickly refurbished and reformatted an extra server and shipped it to Iraq – free of charge – so the Indiana National Guard's 1st Battalion of the 163rd Field Artillery could use it as an e-mail and Web server. Specifically, it helped keep valuable communications of records and training procedure flowing with little tolerance for interruption.

The Indiana National Guard Battalion later presented a special award to Stamm as well as Atlas Chairman Michael Shaffer – who is also a Vietnam Veteran.

"Because we have a number of employees who serve, or have served in the armed forces, we take extra pride in providing assistance to the military in any way that we can," Shaffer said. "It's a unique part of our company and an important service to our country." Shaffer is due to retire from his Chairman’s position at the end of 2007, while Stamm is still at the reigns as CEO.

Atlas Van Lines is the largest subsidiary of Atlas World Group, an Evansville, Ind.-based company that posted record revenues of $986 million in 2006. Atlas World Group companies employ more than 700 people throughout North America. More than 500 Atlas agents in the United States and Canada specialize in corporate employee relocation and in the transportation of high-value items. For the Indiana National Guard and its mission-critical technology needs, no doubt Atlas serviced it with extremely high value.
