John Huey, a former Navy intelligence officer who became managing editor of Fortune magazine in 1995, is the new editorial director of Time Inc., the second-highest editorial position in the company. He now has direct control over more magazines – the company publishes more than 60 -- than any other editor in Time Inc. history.

After five years during which he reinvigorated the venerable yet moribund Fortune, Mr. Huey, 53, had been named earlier this year to oversee the Fortune Group of magazines. In his new role, he will have daily editorial oversight of Time, Sports Illustrated, People, and Entertainment Weekly in addition to Fortune, Money, Business 2.0, Fortune Small Business, and Mutual Funds.

Before becoming managing editor of Fortune, Mr. Huey had been a senior editor there for seven years. In 1992 he co-authored the New York Times best-seller Sam Walton: Made in America. An Atlanta native, he previously worked as a reporter at the Atlanta Journal Constitution before joining the Wall Street Journal as a writer and editor.

In January 2000, Mr. Huey was named to TJFR’s list of "Business News Luminaries of the Century" and to Columbia Journalism Review’s list of Top Ten Editors. Fortune was named to Advertising Age’s list of "The Best Magazines" in 1999 and to Adweek’s "Hot List" Top Ten Magazines of 1998. In 1999 Mr. Huey was appointed to lead a team in developing a strategic plan for a Time Inc. Internet business and finance hub.
